The publication of works on Wilde is not unusual – a new one comes out at every now and again. Coincidentally, 2018 saw the publication of at least four new major works on him as well – three biographies and a commentary.* The movie came out last year and earned praise by Wilde’s grandson, Merlin Holland. The Happy Prince, a biographical drama focusing on Wilde’s post-prison years, which was written and directed by and features Rupert Everett, makes this apparent. Wilde, however, was also a flawed and complex human being. Wilde himself has enjoyed a wonderful posthumous life, portrayed as a tragic hero who fell victim of Britain’s anti-homosexuality laws and sentiments. The plays also have numerous on-screen adaptations, as does his (only) novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray. His plays enjoy regular performances (the Vaudeville theatre in London just closed a yearlong Wilde season, which featured four plays). Oscar Wilde once expressed the sentiment that “There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.” Not that he had to worry about the latter: Wilde is among the best known and celebrated writers in the English language. Gabriel Devine is an amazing hero, not the callous, mean spirited, self absorbed man everyone thinks he is. I absolutely adore her acceptance of herself, knowing that she doesn’t quite fit the norm and honestly, not caring one bit. I laughed out loud more than a few times as Madelyn made her way across the pages of this book, stumbling, fumbling, interfering and making a nuisance of herself, and doing it all unapologetically. Honestly, this story has many funny, tender and steamy moments. It is one of the funniest scenes I’ve read in a long, long while. We first see Madelyn Haywood as she’s running through Gabriel Devine, Duke of Wolverest’s garden, trying to escape his solicitor’s attempt at giving her an invitation to the Bride Hunt Ball, where his younger brother, Tristan, is to choose a wife. The wit, the passion and the lighthearted but touching story made At The Bride Hunt Ball a book I couldn’t put down. It was low on angst, filled with humor, and I can’t even begin to tell you how thrilled I am to have found another Historical Romance author whose writing and characters reminded me of my three favorite writers in this genre Julie Garwood, Julia Quinn and Lisa Kleypas. This was one of the most delightful novels I’ve read in a long time. 5/20/2023 0 Comments A theory of justice book buy(Submitted by Penguin Random House, Cynthia Summers) Vincent Lam uses fiction to explore different approaches to the opioid crisis. In Paris, he soon befriended Diderot, who would go on to fame as an editor of the Encyclopédie. Rousseau moved to Paris in 1742 to pursue a career as a musician and composer. de Warens sent him during this period to Turin, where he renounced his Calvinism and converted to Roman Catholicism. Over the next ten years, he earned money as a lackey, engraver, and music teacher. There at the age of sixteen he met Françoise-Louise de Warens, a woman who would become his benefactor and mistress. Apprenticed to an engraver, Rousseau eventually left Geneva in 1728, fleeing to Annecy. His father was forced to leave Geneva while Rousseau was still young. His mother died a few days after his birth, and he was raised by his father, a clockmaker, who cared for learning and had Rousseau read classical Greek and Roman literature. No other philosopher’s biography is perhaps so well-known as that of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who made his own life the subject of a number of his writings, including his great autobiographical work, the Confessions. |
